Tikvah Center - Outpatient Counseling Services

What are outpatient counseling services?

Recovery is not a destination; it is an ongoing practice. Our Outpatient Counseling Services (often referred to as General Outpatient) are designed for individuals who have stabilized in their recovery and are ready to navigate daily life with less supervision, but still value consistent therapeutic guidance.

Outpatient Counseling is the least restrictive level of care we offer. Unlike IOP or PHP, which are structured programs with set hours, Outpatient Counseling consists of scheduled appointments with a therapist or a specific group.

This is what most people think of when they hear "therapy." It is a flexible, long-term resource designed to help you process life’s inevitable ups and downs without disrupting your work, education, or family routine. It is the "maintenance" phase of recovery, ensuring that the progress you’ve made remains permanent.

The Benefits of Outpatient Counseling

For those with a solid foundation in recovery, Outpatient Counseling offers a unique set of advantages:

  • Maximum Flexibility: Sessions are scheduled by appointment, making it easy to fit therapy around a full-time job, school studies, or household responsibilities.
  • Individualized Attention: One-on-one sessions allow for a deep dive into personal history, trauma, and specific relationship dynamics that may not be addressed in a group setting.
  • Prevention: Regular check-ins serve as an early warning system, allowing you to catch and address potential triggers or stressors before they lead to relapse.
  • Privacy: This level of care is highly discreet, ideal for community members who require strict confidentiality while seeking help.
  • Holistic Growth: Beyond addiction, outpatient care allows you to work on broader life goals, such as career advancement, marriage, and parenting.

How Does Outpatient Counseling Work?

Personalized attention with a compassionate counselor

Our outpatient services are tailored to meet you where you are in your journey.

1. The Schedule

Unlike the fixed schedules of IOP/PHP, outpatient care is determined by you and your therapist. Most clients attend one to two sessions per week, lasting 45 to 60 minutes each. As you progress, sessions may move to bi-weekly or monthly check-ins.

2. Clinical Modalities

We offer a wide range of therapeutic disciplines to suit your specific needs, including:

  • Individual Psychotherapy (CBT, Talk Therapy)
  • Trauma therapies (EMDR or Somatic Experiencing)
  • Couples and Family Counseling
3. The Spiritual Component

Our outpatient therapists understand the nuances of the Jewish experience. You will never have to explain the pressures of Shidduchim (matchmaking), the dynamics of the Chagim (holidays), or community expectations. We offer:

  • Culturally competent therapy that respects Halachic values.
  • Coordination with your Rabbi or Rebbetzin (with your permission) to ensure clinical and spiritual goals are aligned.
  • Guidance on navigating recovery within the Jewish community.
  • Spiritual guidance for non-Jews in Recovery

Does insurance cover these sessions?

Yes. Individual and group therapy are standard medical benefits covered by most insurance plans. Co-pays may apply depending on your specific policy.

Can I choose my therapist?

We do our best to match you with a clinician who fits your personality and needs. We have both male and female therapists available to ensure your comfort and adherence to Tzniut (modesty) sensitivities if requested.

How long do I need to be in counseling?

There is no set timeline. Some clients find the support they need in a few months, while others view therapy as a long-term tool for self-discovery and maintain a relationship with their therapist for years. The choice is yours.

Is this just for addiction?

No. We treat a wide variety of behavioral health issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and relationship difficulties. You do not need a substance use history to access our counseling services.

Do I have to complete IOP or PHP before doing Outpatient Counseling?

Not necessarily. While many clients step down to Outpatient care after completing a more intensive program, others start directly here. If your symptoms are mild to moderate and you have a strong support system, Outpatient Counseling may be the right starting point.

Is my family involved?

We strongly encourage family involvement. Addiction affects the whole family unit, and recovery is most successful when the family heals together. We offer family support groups and family therapy sessions as part of the PHP curriculum.

Will my employer know I am here?

Your privacy is paramount. We adhere to strict HIPAA confidentiality laws. Unless you sign a release of information specifically allowing us to speak to your employer, we cannot confirm or deny your presence in our program.

What is the difference between IOP and PHP?

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is more intensive, often requiring 5 to 6 hours of treatment daily, five days a week. Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is less time-intensive (usually 9 hours per week) and is often the next step down after completing a PHP.

Do I have to be religious or Orthodox to attend?

No. Our center is a judgment-free zone open to Jews of all backgrounds—secular, reform, conservative, or orthodox—as well as non-Jewish individuals seeking high-quality care. We respect where you are in your spiritual journey.
